University seeks HIV+
University Hospitals of Cleveland is currently seeking volunteers for two clinical research trials related to HIV invection. Eligible individuals are HIV+ (have a positive antibody test for HIV invection) and are basically healthy (either free of symptoms or with minor, early signs of AIDS-Related Complex or ARC). The drug, AZT, is the cornerstone of both experimental therapies. Previously, AZT has been administered to patients in advanced stages of AIDS, but is is now being tested for its ability to prevent or mitigate progress to full-scale AIDS in the two groups of identified individuals, balance against any side-effects.
Participants will be asked to maintain their primary health care with their regular physicians, but they must come to the hospital for the study. However, the two specific studies for which University Hospitals is now recruiting, require participants to be

seen at the hospital every other week during the first 4 months, and then once a month for the duration of the study. All visits related to the study will be on an out-patient basis. Participant confidentiality will be maintained by the assignment of a unique code number to all reports and lab studies.
Both University Hospitals, which are conducting the clinical segment of this research, and Cleveland Clinic, which is carrying out related physician education, are part of the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) "AIDS Clinical Trials Group." This group is made up of designated medical and research centers nationwide and funded by NIH to conduct research and experimental therapies related to AIDS. Besides carrying out the two studies already described, University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic will be engaged in other trials and projects as they emerge, each new trial will have its

Issue
(Continued From Page One)
coming out process for gay men involves only an introduction to the bars and the nearest adult bookstore. While there are admittedly some similarities, I believe that coming out is unique to each person who experiences it. The issues a person chooses to become politicized on are also an individual choice and should not be confused with recognition of one's sexual preference. While it may come as a shock to Ms. Ananda, there are many gay men who have never visited an adult bookstore nor do they have any desire to do so. Furthermore, lest we forget our gay history, the birth of the contemporary gay movement did not take place in a lesbian library, but at a dirty old gay dive called The Stonewall Inn, with a group of angry drag queens leading the protest.
As the editorial continues Ms. Ananda drags up the nearly dead issue of gay men referring to each other as
that prevent us from becoming a cohesive community. I can't help but think that her motive for writing in such a manner was not to address an issue, but to create an issue in order to release her personal anger and to give some justification to her own insecurities.
in I sincerely hope that choosing future guest editorialists the Chronicle uses more discretion by picking more responsible writers who have something legitimate to say.
As far as the Names Project is concerned, like so many other events, those of us who recognize the significance of the quilt and its visit to Cleveland will be there working and lending our support, all others will be on the sidelines making excuses for their noninvolvement.
"girl" or "woman". If she would only Gay Pole
bother to understand the history, purpose and context of gay camp she would realize that in the gay community these terms are not meant as derogatory but as terms of endearment. What's more, for one gay man to refer to another as his "sister" is considered to be one of the highest forms of gay flattery. The feminine terms are used because traditionally relationships between women are considered to be more loving than those between men. As a politicized lesbian I would think that Ms. Ananda would understand that holistically.
The entire piece was so clearly biased that all it really accomplishes is to reinforce old myths and fuel fires
